Critical behavior in spallation failure of metals

چکیده
Using molecular dynamics with an accurate many-body potential, we studied the rapid expansion of Ta metal following the high compression ~50 to 100 GPa! induced by high velocity (2 to 4 km/s! impact. We find that catastrophic failure in this system coincides with a critical behavior characterized by a void distribution of the form N(v)}V, with t;2.2. This corresponds to a threshold in which percolation of the voids results in tensile failure. We define an order parameter (f , the ratio of the volume of the largest void to the total void volume! which changes rapidly from ;0 to ;1 when the metal fails and scales with as f}(r2rc) b with exponent b;0.4, where r is the total void fraction. We found similar behavior for FCC Ni suggesting that this critical behavior is a universal characteristic for failure of solids in rapid expansion.

متن کاملComparative Study of Plasma Sprayed Yittria and Ceria Stabilized Zirconia Properties
Thermal Barrier Coatings are subjected to spallation and destabilization due to hot corrosion.Recently, Ceria Stabilized Zirconia (CSZ)-based TBCs have been intensively investigated for the YSZreplacement because CSZ has a much lower thermal conductivity and a higher expected thermalexpansion coefficient than those of YSZ. In this research, Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) andceria stabilized z...
متن کاملHigh Strain Ra 33 . High Strain Rate and Impact Experiments
Experimental techniques for high-strain-rate measurements and for the study of impactrelated problems are described. An approach to classifying these experimental techniques is presented, and the state-of-the-art is briefly described. An in-depth description of the basis for high-strain-rate experiments is presented, with an emphasis on the development of a range of strain rates and a range of ...
متن کاملCharacteristic Points of Stress-Strain Curve at High Temperature
Determination of critical points on hot stress-strain curve of metals is crucial in thermo-mechanical processes design. In this investigation a mathematical modeling is given to illustrate the behavior of metal during hot deformation processes such as hot rolling. The critical strain for the onset of dynamic recrystallization has been obtained as a function of strain at the maximum stress. In a...

composite concrete-steel plate shear walls are the most critical resisting structural members that resist lateral and axial loads. This type of wall consisting of two steel faceplates presenting the outer skin, infill concrete and shear connectors which are used to provide the composite action of the steel faceplates with infill concrete in order to increase the strength and to reduce the local...
